University of Miami Students Take Over Admin Building

At Discourse.net Professor Froomkin reports that 20 students have taken over the Ashe Administration Building at the University of Miami and asks why is Donna Shalala afraid of Father Frank Corbishley?

The SEIU led strikers are demanding better pay, healthcare benefits and union representation.  God knows UM charges enough for tuition.

UM students stage sit-in at administration building in support of janitors strike

To show support of the University of Miami janitors strike, about 19 students began a sit-in in the administration building about noon today.

Jacob Coker-Dukowitz, a junior at UM, said: 'We are sitting in because the university refuses to honor workers' rights and dignity consistently. This is about President Shalala not respecting that right, and Unicco not respecting that right.''

Coker-Dukowitz said he and the 18 other students plan to engage in sit-in as long as necessary.

I have it on good authority that Associate Dean Donna Coker's son is named Jacob, but I do not know if the Jacob Coker-Dukowitz is one and the same.

I feel like I am having a flashblack.

The local CBS station reports that the service company, UNICCO Service Co.

has publicly refused to allow the janitors to choose a card-check election; instead they have embarked on anti-union campaign to intimidate workers from organizing with Local 11 and insisted that the janitors subject themselves to a NLRB election that could take years.
